Converting an Existing Vehicle

What types of cars can get converted?

Almost all unleaded petrol-fuelled vehicles can be converted to LPG, subject to space limitations. Large sedans, utes, vans, station wagons, four-wheel drives can all be converted. CLICK HERE to find your nearest installer who will be able to advise you if your vehicle can be converted to LPG.

How does my car get converted?

A steel LPG storage tank is installed which is manufactured to comply with AS 3509 and installed to meet the stringent safety requirements of AS 1425. This tank is usually installed in the forward part of the boot but it can go under the floor in vehicles with enough clearance, eg 4WD's. New equipment is added to the vehicle but very little of the existing equipment is changed or removed. All conversions will, however, include a dedicated gas fill point.

You can choose between having your vehicle run solely on LPG or both LPG and petrol, which is known as duel-fuel.

How quickly can I get a conversion done?

That will depend entirely upon the chosen AAFRB Registered Business and their work load at the time. With the introduction of the Government rebate interest in installations has significantly increased so some sort of waiting period is expected with most installers. CLICK HERE to find your nearest AAFRB Registered Business who will be able to advise you of when a conversion can be done.

How long does a conversion take?

The installation time will vary depending on a number of factors including tank options, the number of cylinders, position of the tank etc. A typical family sedan with a single boot-mounted tank should take approximately two to three days. While a large four wheel drive with multiple tanks might take up to a week.

How much does a conversion cost?

This will depend on the type of vehicle to be converted and the licensed installer you select. Typical conversions can range from $2,000 to $4,000 and will also depend on whether you choose to have your vehicle run solely on LPG or both LPG and petrol, which is known as duel-fuel. Conversion to duel-fuel is more expensive than LPG only.  However, this cost can be quickly recouped via the Government rebate and the savings made at the pump every time you fill up. CLICK HERE to find your nearest AAFRB Registered Business who will be able to provide you with a quote to convert your vehicle.
