Government LPG Vehicle Grants
Since Monday 14 August 2006 the Federal Government have provided grants for the purchase of an LPG vehicle or the conversion of a vehicle to run on LPG.
To assist Australian motorists battle the rising price of petrol the Federal Government introduced in August 2006 a rebate scheme to encourage the use of LPG.
The Federal Government will provide grants for the purchase of a new vehicle with LPG as well as the conversion of an existing diesel or petrol vehicle to run on LPG.
The grants are as follows;
New private use vehicles fitted with an LPG unit prior to first registration will receive a grant of $2,000. This grant will remain at $2,000 for the life of the Scheme.
For registered vehicles converted to LPG, the LPG Vehicle Scheme will provide grants for conversions of private use vehicles at the following rates:
- $1,500 for conversions from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011;
- $1,250 for conversions from 1 July 2011 to 30 June 2012; (capped at 25,000 claims per annum) and
- $1,000 for conversions from 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2014.
The full grant is available regardless of the cost of the conversion or the extra cost of a new dedicated LPG vehicle. For example, the $1500 is available for a conversion whether you pay $1,800 or $3,500.
To be eligible the vehicle must be for private use (not for commercial or business use) and:
be a passenger or light commercial vehicle weighing less than 3.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass
be registered in the state of residence of the claimant
must not be subject to a novated lease or salary sacrifice
and will only be available for one conversion per person every three years
These grants will be available until 30 june 2015, so there is plenty of time to get LPG for your vehicle.
You will need to pay for the purchase or conversion first and then claim back the grant from either a Centrelink or Medicare office.
You must lodge your application within 12 months of the date of invoice for your new vehicle or vehicle conversion in order to receive the grant.
Application forms are available from Centrelink and Medicare locations and via the AusIndustry web site.
